Japan, Tokyo- Katsukura Restaurant
Katsukura Restaurant, in Shinjuku, Tokyo
Yes, the sign did say Kyoto, however this is the branch in Tokyo and they originated from Kyoto.
The interior of the restaurant, okay, it is a bad shot, but this is all I got for the restaurant =(
This is the english menu that is very helpful for us to choose the different type of pork that they have, and the different cut all well explained in the menu. Also, look, there is Free Refills, of Barley Rice, Vegetables and Miso Soup, so it was quite a hectic dinner.
This is what was provided on the table, when we were seated
The three containers are different sauces, the one from the left is the vegetable dressing sauce, the second one is a spicy sweet sauce (the waitress did say spicy, but it is more of a BBQ flavour kind of) and the last one is a sweet sauce. I preferred the spicy sweet sauce with the meat, as it brings out the flavor a lot more.
Some salad to start the meal
They gave us sesame seed to grind manually, so we can actually decide how fine we want our sesame seed to be, and we will pour the sauce into the bowl with the sesame seed and mixed it, before using it for the meat.
Babababa! the highlight of the meat, Deep Fried Pork Loin, Tonkatsu. there are different weightage of the pork as well as different cut and different type. So, if you are feeling wealthy, go ahead and get the best type of meat. However, I settled for the original Pork Loin that they serve and I was still not disappointed by the quality of the meat.
As you can see, from my strategical placed pork, the fat contain is crazily awesome, the top of the pork and the middle has a good amount of fats that really dissolve when you bite into it. the skin is crisp and does not give such a oily mouthfeel, but still enough to be able to slid down your throat so awesomely.
Overall, I will go back again and again, if I were to visit Japan again, as there are only a few shops that can probably recreate such a tonkatsu here in Singapore, but the price wise, well, it will be a lot higher than as compared.

Japan, Tokyo- Umegaoka Sushi No Midori Sohonten
Umegaoka Sushi No Midori Sohonten in Shibuya, Tokyo.
The entrance of the restaurant, so before we can enter, there is a ticket machine outside of the store, where we have to choose the number of people, and whether we want to be seated at the counter or not. On the first day that we attempted to go, we had a ticket that was 40 numbers away, and we end up missing because we were out shopping. =/
The next day, we went there an hour before they open just to get a queue number, and surprise surprise, there were already people ahead of us.
Luckily, we still manage to went in when the shop opened and start the feast.
we seated at the counter, just because we want to see the chef in action and the chef that hosted us was really friendly, the one at the most left. He knew that we were foreign, and will recommend us dishes on what to eat and even have friendly chit chat with limited chinese and english.
We had the Chef Special where there is an assorted sushi, and here is one page of the menu, the other side has no english, therefore we did not even try to order, as the chef was busy preparing our meal.
So for starters, Chawan-mushi and a crab salad was served, I have to say that the salad was extraordinary, the flavour match with the shredded crab and the sauce was sweet with citrus flavour, it was delicious, the least to say.
The plate was placed in front of the counter, and whatever the chef has prepared, he will just put on the plate, where we will just eat whatever he had prepared. I wanted to wait for the whole meal to arrive before eating, however, I just could not resist when the first wave of sushi arrive.
Okay, I have to admit that I do not know most of what I ate, As even some of the sushi was not presented in the English menu, however out of these six sushi on the top, the two sushi in the middle stand out the most, the top middle was the medium fatty tuna, while the bottom middle was the extra fatty tuna sushi. I had never ate such fatty tuna before and I was blown away by the tuna meat where it was so soft and smooth. I could not resist but order another set of the tuna sushi just to taste how awesome this sushi is.
The tamago was pretty good also, it was not as sweet as the type that you usually have in Singapore, while the cheap type that I usually eat, which I still like though, but this was different, it has other flavours beside the sweetness, it has a rich flavour.
From the left, we have the Snow Crab Sushi, Shrimp Sushi, Ark Shell Sushi and Grain Shellfish Sushi. The snow crab sushi was incredibly tasteful and soft likewise the shrimp sushi, however some may not like it, as it has the slimy texture as well, but it was so awesome. the ark shell and grain shellfish was rather chewy however still fresh and lovely.
Next, we have these sushi, where I forgot the name of the sushi on the left, its the white fish thing, it was chewy and there is a dash of ginger on top, which gives a nice refreshing bite to it. In the middle, it is the salmon roe sushi, where it is oh my god tasty, each egg just burst when I bit into it while the last one is the sea urchin sushi, it was a interesting texture, slimy and mushy, but hey, if it taste good, I ain't complaining.
Last of the sushi were the tuna roll and the Unagi sushi. I have to say that I am very impress wih the Unagi sushi, it was soft, it was flavourful, it was beautiful, it was delicious. Words can't describe this awesome flavour that I experience when I ate the Unagi sushi, but it may be because I really like to eat Unagi, and this was out of the world. The tuna roll was decent to say, but it could be that the Unagi just totally consumed me.
So, this is all the sushi that was presented to us in the Chef Special Meal, I had to ask my friend to take a picture, because he could resist eating, but I could not. It was a awesome experience that I had to other some more sushi, however due to my hunger, I did not take any pictures.
Though i did take picture of this tamago sushi, as I was amazed at the size of the tamago, with the small amount of rice. It was absolutely lovely to eat a sushi like this.
Most of the sushi had a dash of wasabi inside them, therefore they do not provide wasabi except soy sauce, though some sushi had a very strong wasabi flavour in it, it does complements the dish perfectly well.
Last but not least, the dessert that came with the meal, there were two choices, pudding or jelly, I took the jelly, it was a mild flavour jelly but it does end the meal well.
This awesome sushi chef was the chef that took our order, and chit chat when it took a while longer for our sushi to arrive, he is a funny guy and I feel that he really help to make our meal better.

Stateland Cafe
Image taken from uniquelicious.blogspot.com
Stateland cafe has been raved for its top waffles to try in Singapore, and after the wonderful brunch (for me) at Group Therapy in Katong V, we came here to try the Waffles.
It was around 1pm by the time we reached there, Stateland Cafe is expanding, and we went to the other side to seat, therefore the little people, while the other side it is bustling with people (As usual isn't it)?
The menu in Stateland Cafe.

Being pretty full, I ordered just a normal Belgium Waffles with Ice cream on top. Meh, the Waffles is really crispy, but didn't had much of the fluffiness taste when biting down the Waffles. Didn't think it was worth the rave.
My friend ordered Black Forest, which also he think the Waffles was pretty 'burnt'. Maybe that's the way the cafe do their Waffles, but nah. Not going to come back again.
On a side note, my second cup of Cappuccino tasted really nice. It was more of a latte then a Cappuccino, I can taste the milk more then the espresso taste, but it was good overall.

Group Therapy in Katong V
It was a Monday morning, so we decided to give the newly opened Group Therapy branch at Katong V a try!
For all those that wonder where is the location, this is just opposite Katong Shopping Center, it is a newly opened shopping mall! Though it is really pretty small.
We arrived the place at around 11am. Despite raining outside, the cafe itself still seems pretty packed. It was lucky that we managed to grab a seat before the place went full!
The cafe's menu.

I ordered Cappuccino. The taste of the cappuccino was a bit bitter, I think they roasted their beans a bit too much that day.
Hotcakes with strawberries and bananas, it was commented that the hotcakes are pretty average, nothing special about it.
I ordered my favourite eggs benedict. I really like how the way they serve their eggs benedict with such generous serving of Hollandaise sauce and many slices of fresh salmon. They didn't had muffin that day, so I opted for brioche. The combo was so fantabulous, I really really enjoyed the meal! It was so good I definitely don't mind coming back again for the eggs benedict.
One thumbs up: Waitresses there are really pretty and very attentive to what you need!

Laurent Cafe & Chocolate Bar
Along Robinson Quay, this small cafe has not only a relaxing outdoor atmostphere, but a cozy inside as well.
This place is more crowded in the night then it is in the afternoon, so I would say going there earlier would be a wiser choice, if not waiting for a seat would be quite tedious.
I had 3 of their creations from the counter, one was the cheese cake which was creamy and thick as to how I love my cheese cake to be. although the raspberry sauce is looks like it is only a design for the plating, it does go well with the cheese cake for some extra flavors to it.

I was told that they have great chocolate souffles, such a shame that they ran out of it when I went there, so should I go down again, hopefully they will have it.

Next, I had the Tiramisu, which was pretty decent. In my opinion, there was not much of a wow factor in it, so I would not have that again if I were to go down there. Though the coffee flavor do kick in at the back of your tongue.

Last but not least, I had their chocolate cake, forgot the name for this lovely product, it was delicious.
The thickness of the chocolate, and the bittersweet taste was just delicious. It is made up of two different layers which makes up four layers of cake and chocolate. They are really serious when it comes to chocolate products, I was ashamed for not getting more of their other chocolate products and I would go down again just for their chocolate cakes.

Penny University
This cafe, is extremely popular in the East. Cafe-hoppers will never want to miss this wonderful cafe located along the stretch of East Roast Road, it is often packed so you will definitely won't miss the crowd outside waiting to find a seat inside.
I heard they are famous for their cakes as well, I will come take a look in the future.

Eggs Benedict with Smoked Salmon and a cup of Latte.
What can I say about this? It's just too good. The Hollandaise Sauce was far by the best I've ever had. Generous serving, and it was thick with a tinge of sweetness and sour taste! The salmon slices were extremely fresh also, you add all of them together and you get the awesome Eggs Benny.
This dish is O-M-G. Best!
Coming back to the aromatic cup of latte, having a very smooth texture and milky taste, it definitely tops the experience of Penny University being the best so far. It's a must to come here!
Unfortunately they are not up for reservations so you have to go there and wait out for a seat.

Choupinette
Choupinette is a cosy cafe located along Upper Bukit Timah. Its Poached Eggs topped with Hollandaise Sauce is pretty raved on if you search upon search engines where is the best eggs benedict in Singapore. And tadah, this place is it!
I had the Eggs Royale. The poached eggs were runny and soft, one bite and the whole thing just melts, so awesome! Salmon Slices were really fresh and the Hollandaise Sauce that were on top of the poached eggs were very rich and creamy, not to forget the generous serving given! The whole entire combination was just so good! The coffee was nothing to be raved about though.

The cream puff, was also ordered as a dessert after such a fulfilling meal. Nothing special, just a normal cream puff you can find anywhere enlarged version in my opinion. :)
All in all, this place is wonderful and I will definitely come back again!
Oh did I mention you can also reserve in advance for seating in this wonderful place?
